Link a place to your project

Linking is always an action you take in the app: an agent cannot link a place.

A VibeStarter project works on one specific Roblox place. To recognize it, the app writes an identity marker into the place and compares it with the identity of the project. When the two match, sync starts by itself, with no click and no question.

  • Save your place to Roblox at least once: the app then recognizes it automatically. A place never saved to Roblox can also be linked by hand, and it receives your code like the others; without a Roblox ID, the app tells it apart only by its Studio window.
  • A single place can belong to a given project at a given time; a project, however, can group several places (see Several worlds in one game).
  1. In the workspace, click New Project.
  2. Enter the Game name. Under the field, Project folder shows the name of the folder created on your disk, derived from the game name; Change lets you change it (“Letters, numbers, - and _ only.”). The game name stays the project name in the app: tab, card, “Roblox Studio” banner.
  3. Click Create Project. The app downloads the template and sets up the project. If your Roblox account is already linked, your Roblox ID is registered as the project administrator; otherwise, there is nothing to enter.
  4. The app shows “Project ready!”, the game name as you entered it, then “Folder: …” with the location of the folder. Then come the Next steps:
    • “Open Roblox Studio and create a new experience (or open your existing place).”
    • “Save it to Roblox”, with Ctrl + S (Cmd + S on Mac) or the menu File → Save to Roblox As…. It stays private. This save creates the Roblox universe of your place — it is what runs the DataStores, so the players’ saves, the economy and the leaderboards.
    • “Open the project (button below): it walks you through linking your place, then sync starts on its own.”
  5. Click Open the project.

When you open the project, the app analyzes the place open in Studio and ends up in one of the five situations below.

Is Roblox Studio openon a place?Does the place carry aVibeStarter project marker? Is this project presenton this machine?Does the project have a backupto restore?yesyesnononoyesyesnoStudio closed“Roblox Studio is not open”Place not linked“Place not linked to a project”Place linked to this project“This project is linked to that place.”Project missing from the machineto clone from its backupOrphan placeproject source not found
The analysis of the open place, and the five possible answers. Only the third lets sync start by itself.

On the home page, the “Roblox Studio” banner shows “Studio is open on” followed by the project name, then “This project is linked to that place.” Click Open. The project’s entry screen shows the project name followed by “is open in Studio”, and sync starts by itself.

The app shows Place not linked to a project and offers two actions: either

Link an existing project, or New Project.

From a project’s entry screen, the message is “The open place isn’t linked to this project” / “Link it so VibeStarter can sync your code into it.”, with the Link this place button.

3. The place comes from a project missing from this machine

Section titled “3. The place comes from a project missing from this machine”

The app shows “This place belongs to a VibeStarter project that isn’t on this machine.” and offers

Clone project, and also Link an existing project as soon as a project is present on the machine. This is the case when you open, on a new computer, a place already linked elsewhere.

The app shows “VibeStarter project from another machine — source not found.” The place’s marker points to a project for which the app does not know where to find the code. You can link the place to a project present on the machine.

The app shows “Roblox Studio is not open” and waits. Open your place: if it is already linked to this project, sync starts by itself; otherwise, the app offers to link it.

For a project with no linked place, the entry screen shows “Open a place in Roblox Studio”, then “No place saved to Roblox is linked to this project yet.” Under Learn more: “Create a new place in Roblox Studio, or open your game’s place. If it is not linked to this project yet, the app offers “Link this place”; sync then starts by itself.” A project linked only to a place never saved to Roblox gets the same text.

Neighboring case: Studio is open, but all its windows belong to a project open in another tab. For this project, no place is open. The entry screen shows “Open … in Roblox Studio”, with the project name, then “Studio is open on …, a different project open in the app.” The “Studio connection” line specifies “No open Studio window belongs to this project”.

Under Learn more: “Open this project’s place in Roblox Studio: it connects by itself. To use a place that is already open here instead, first close the tab of the project using it.”

If this project has no linked place yet, the title is “Open a place in Roblox Studio” and the text under

Learn more becomes: “In Roblox Studio, create a new place or open your game’s place, next to the one already open. If it is not linked to this project yet, the app offers “Link this place”. To use a place that is already open here instead, first close the tab of the project using it.”

  1. Open the place in Roblox Studio and save it to Roblox if you have not already done so.
  2. In the app, open the project. The entry screen shows “Analyzing the open place…” then the state of the place.
  3. Click Link this place: the link is immediate. If another place is open, the button reads Use this place; it becomes Confirm link?, to be clicked within a few seconds.
  4. Sync starts. The header shows “Connecting to Studio…”. On the “VibeStarter Sync plugin” line, the following messages appear one after another: “Starting VibeStarter Sync…”, “Auto-connecting…”, “Sending your code to Studio…”, then “VibeStarter Sync plugin connected.” A step that lasts less than a second is not visible.

The project name does not depend on the place

Section titled “The project name does not depend on the place”

The project keeps the name entered in Game name. Linking a place, linking a second one or unlinking one never renames it. A project with no saved name shows the name of its folder. This is the case for a project created before 3.6.0: it keeps the name of its folder, the one you know it by. Version 3.6.0 showed the name of its Roblox place instead (“Untitled experience”, “Place of …”); 3.6.1 restores the folder name. No project was created, moved or deleted by this change of title.

This name is the same everywhere in the app: tab, card, “Roblox Studio” banner, search with

Ctrl + K (which also finds the project by the name of its folder), deletion confirmations and “Recent activity” in your statistics. The mention window, Mention a project, also lists projects under this name, with the folder on the second line when it differs; its search finds a project by either one.

The Cloud uses this name too. On a computer that has never opened the project, or for an invited teammate, the Cloud project card, the invitation card and the confirmation “Invitation accepted — …” show the game name, not the folder name. The Open here button always creates a folder named after the original folder: the game name is part of no path.

For a project hosted before 3.6.0, the name reaches the Cloud at the next sync, from a computer that already has the project. Until then, its Cloud cards still show the folder name.

A place of the project’s Roblox experience cannot be unlinked. The Unlink button concerns a place from another experience, or one never saved to Roblox, that carries the project’s marker. It is found in two places:

  • on the “Roblox Studio” banner of the home page, when only one place of the project is open;
  • in the Project places panel, on the place’s line.

With several places open, the banner does not offer Unlink: it shows only one line per project. It displays “N places of this project are open. To unlink one, open the project then click the screen icon on its tab (“Project places”).”

The app always asks for confirmation: “Unlink this place?” — “VibeStarter will no longer send the code of “…” to this place. The code already sent stays there, and the project, its files and its other places do not change. You can link it again whenever you want.” Confirm with Unlink.

In Project places, the header shows “Updating sync…” until the new number of connections arrives. If the place could not be unlinked, the message appears under its line: “The place could not be unlinked. Check that it is still open in Studio, then try again.”

On a shared project, linking a place does not change the project’s Roblox experience when you are an editor: your place serves as a test place. See The project’s Roblox experience.

When you open a project, a single card appears. At the top, a sentence states the state of the place — “Open … in Roblox Studio” (“Open a place in Roblox Studio” for a project with no linked place), then “… is open in Studio” — with the button to click when there is one. If the code does not compile once the place is open, this sentence becomes “The code doesn’t compile right now”, with an orange triangle. Below, a progress line with its counter carries the setup header:

Header What it means
“Setting up your project…” the project preparation is in progress
“Connecting to Studio…” the project is ready, Studio is connecting: nothing to do
“Almost ready — finish in Studio” the app is waiting for an action from you, indicated above
“Sync on hold” the place is open, but the code does not compile: sync will resume as soon as it compiles
“App update needed” the app and its Studio plugin are not on the same version
“Ready” Studio is connected, the screen opens
“Bring-up failed” a step failed: Retry is on that step

This line expands to show the details:

Line What it tracks
Studio connection whether the plugin is attached to the window
VibeStarter Sync plugin whether the code actually arrives in the place
Project bring-up code, tools, dependencies, Roblox packages and compilation

Successful checks group together under “N checks completed”. A line that needs your action moves above the progress, and each failed step has its own Retry button. If sync does not start, the app itself suggests the fallback: “If nothing happens, quit and reopen Roblox Studio.”

The Continue anyway link always remains available to enter the project regardless. As long as a place of another project is open, the screen does not open by itself.

On the home page, each project card shows a single state. A project open in a tab says that it is open; a closed project says where it stands with Studio:

State What it means
Agents running the project is open and agents are running in it
Terminal open, or Terminals open the project is open and has only terminals running, with no agent
Open the project is open in a tab
Online the project is not open, but it syncs in a Studio window
Available the project is not open, and one of its places is open in Studio
no Studio state no Studio window for this project

Under Agents running or Terminal open, the card counts the session tabs running, then the agents and the terminals, each under its own name: “1 tab · 1 terminal”, “2 tabs · 2 agents · 1 terminal”.

The Open another project menu lists only closed projects, with the mention “Online” or “Available”, or with no mention. For an open project, sync is read on its tab: “Synced with Studio” or “Open, Studio not connected”. See Reading a project tab.

  • A place never saved to Roblox cannot be recognized automatically: you must link it by hand.
  • An agent cannot link a place. This is deliberately reserved for you, from the app. Even when it is the only place open in Studio, a place without a marker is never linked automatically: you must confirm the link.
  • The identity marker lives in the place: copying and pasting a place creates a second one that claims the same project.

My places are no longer detected. What should I do? Check that the place is saved to Roblox, close it then reopen it in Studio, and restart the project. If the app offers Link this place or Use this place, link it again. The other cases are on the troubleshooting page.

The app says “A different place is open.” The window in front belongs to another project. Open the right place, or click Use this place to attach it to this project — which detaches it from the previous one.

Can I start from a Roblox game that is already underway? Technically yes, but it is not recommended: a VibeStarter project has its own architecture and its own code. Taking over an existing game requires a long and tedious conversion. Starting from a new project gives better results.

Can I open two projects at the same time? Yes: each open project becomes a tab in the top bar and keeps its own Studio sync. See Several projects at the same time.
