Pause and resume a session
A pause saves each agent’s conversation to your disk.
You do not have to finish your work before turning off your computer. A pause saves each agent’s conversation and stops everything; resuming puts each agent back in front of its conversation, where it left off. Stopping, on the other hand, is permanent: that is the one thing not to confuse on this page.
The life cycle of a session
Section titled “The life cycle of a session”Pause or stop
Section titled “Pause or stop”| Pause | Stop | |
|---|---|---|
| The agents | Are stopped | Are stopped |
| The conversations | Saved to your disk | Lost |
| Work in progress | Saved with the conversation | Interrupted |
| Resume possible | Yes, at any time | No, it cannot be undone |
| The project | Stays open | Closes, and sync with Studio stops |
In both cases, your code stays saved: the project is saved automatically, independently of the agents. See Your code is saved automatically.
- Click Pause, to the right of the project bar. The dialog “Pause the agents?” opens.
- Read what it says: “Each conversation is saved, then the agents stop. Resume anytime, even after a restart.”
- Confirm with Pause Session. The app shows “Pausing agents…,” and then everything stops.
The special case of OpenCode
Section titled “The special case of OpenCode”An OpenCode agent cannot be saved in the middle of a turn. If one of them is still working, the app asks you to choose between two buttons:
- Wait for any turn in progress, then pause
- Interrupt any turn in progress, then pause
If all your OpenCode agents are idle, both buttons do the same thing.
Resume
Section titled “Resume”- Reopen the project. The banner “Paused session found” appears, with how long the session has been paused, the number of agents, and the number of tabs.
- Click Resume session. Or click Delete if you want to start from an empty session.
- During the resume, the app shows “Resuming — checking each agent picked its conversation back up…”
- Pick up the thread in each pane: the agents have their conversation, their plan, and their context.
The Continue anyway button is available if the check takes too long. It warns of its effect: “agents that did not respond will start from scratch.”
Close the app
Section titled “Close the app”Closing the app stops all running sessions. It offers a pause instead: accept it if you plan to resume.
What a pause costs in quota
Section titled “What a pause costs in quota”The pause itself uses nothing: nothing is running. What costs quota is resuming an old conversation, because its entire context is read again. Resuming the next morning has no real cost; resuming a conversation that is several days old can seriously use up your quota.
The habit that saves the most: finish a task before pausing, and open a new conversation for the next task. See Making your quota last.
Find a conversation without a paused session
Section titled “Find a conversation without a paused session”If you closed the app without pausing, the conversation is not necessarily lost: the
agent tools have their own resume command, /resume, which lists previous
conversations in the agent’s terminal.
To undo what an agent has just done, Claude Code offers /rewind. Codex does not
have it. Otherwise, go back to an earlier version of your project:
Going back to an earlier version.
Limits
Section titled “Limits”- An OpenCode agent may start from scratch when resumed. The message says: “The session is back, but an OpenCode agent did not get its conversation back — it is starting from scratch. Everything else has picked up where it left off.” This is a limit of OpenCode, not a loss of project data.
- Stopping cannot be undone. The “Stop the agents?” dialog says so: “Every agent stops, its work in progress is lost and the project closes. This can’t be undone.”
- A pause does not save your Roblox place. Also save your work in Roblox Studio before closing.
Frequently asked questions
Section titled “Frequently asked questions”“I have to turn off my PC. Will I lose everything?” No, if you pause. The session is written to your disk and survives a restart.
“Pause or stop at the end of the day?” Pause, unless you have finished and want to start something else tomorrow: a clean start costs less quota than a long conversation that you resume.
“I closed the app and lost my conversation.”
Try /resume in the agent’s terminal. If it is not there, starting over with a clear
instruction often costs less than rebuilding everything.
“Can I launch other agents while a session is paused?” Yes. While they are running, the project bar shows the “N paused” badge; the paused session can be resumed once those agents are stopped or paused.
