Go back to a previous version
Available on any project backed up online, solo or with a team.
Each automatic save creates a version: a dated restore point. You can go back to any of the recent versions at any time. Nothing is destroyed in the process. A restore that changes files adds one more version to your history.
Restore a version
Section titled “Restore a version”- In the project bar, click Versions.
- Scroll down to the Previous versions section. The explanation shown is “Restoring never deletes a version: nothing is lost.” The list shows the last fifty versions, each with its name, its age and its author. Versions created by the app have a readable name: “Automatic save”, “Project created”, “Project linked to a Studio place”, “Merge with the team’s work”, “Work recovered after a history trim”. A version saved by an agent keeps the message it wrote.
- Click Restore on the line of the version you want. The button is always visible.
- Confirm in the “Restore this version?” box: “The files of this version go back to what they contained then, everywhere your project is synced. Files added since then stay in place. Your newer versions stay in the history: you can always move forward again.”
- The “Version restored” message appears: “A new version was added at the top of the list.” If you work in a team, the restore is sent to your teammates immediately. If the restore does not change any file, the message is “Nothing to restore”: “Your project already has this version’s content.” No version is added in that case.
What the restore does exactly
Section titled “What the restore does exactly”- It saves your current work first. The state from before the restore also becomes a recoverable version: you can undo your undo.
- It recreates the code and configuration of the chosen version, including code files deleted since then. Your current images, sounds, models and ignored files stay in place, even if they appeared in an old history.
- It does not delete files added since then. A restore can only bring content back. It never silently erases a teammate’s recent work.
- It is saved as a normal version, with the message “Restore of an earlier version”.
- Restoring a version your project already has is not an error. The app shows “Nothing to restore” and adds no version.
Going further back, or to your images: local archives
Section titled “Going further back, or to your images: local archives”Versions cover the code of the last few hours. For everything else, the app also keeps archives of your projects on your computer: one per day, with the images, sounds and 3D models stored in the project. These archives are what hold your media. The online backup does not keep them.
| You want to… | Use |
|---|---|
| Undo what an agent or you have just done to the code | Versions, in the project |
| Recover an image, sound or model that was overwritten or deleted | An archive, in Settings → Storage → Backups |
| Put a project back to its state from several days ago | An archive |
- Close the project to restore and stop its agents. The app refuses to replace an open project, and names the one that is blocking it.
- Open Settings → Storage, Backups section. Each line is an archive, with its date.
- Click Restore on the archive you want. The “Restore from this archive?” window lists the projects it contains.
- Tick the projects to restore. The others do not change. When the archive contains several projects, none is ticked by default.
- Click Restore 1 project. The app archives the current state first, then replaces the ticked projects.
What an archive restore does exactly:
- The project goes back to its exact state on the day of the archive. What you have added or changed since then disappears from the project. This is the difference with Versions, which never deletes a file that was added.
- The current state is archived first, in the same list. If you picked the wrong archive, restore that one. If this archiving fails, nothing is replaced.
- On a project backed up online, the restore becomes a version, with the message “Restore of a local archive”. Your history stays intact, you can undo it from Versions, and your teammates receive it like any other version.
- A project that stayed local comes back with its history from the day of the archive.
- During a release’s maintenance mode, restoring is refused. Finish the fix first.
How many archives are kept
Section titled “How many archives are kept”- The archives of the last three days that have any, up to three per day.
- Plus two weekly archives.
Creating several archives on the same day no longer pushes out those of previous days.
They are on the same computer as your projects. They protect you from a mistake or a damaged workspace, not from losing the computer. To keep one safe, see Switching computers.
If the daily archive fails
Section titled “If the daily archive fails”The Backups section usually shows “Your projects are archived every day on this computer.” When the automatic archive fails, this line is replaced by “Your projects are no longer archived every day.”, with the cause and the date of the last successful archive (“Last successful archive: …”, or “No archive has been created yet.”).
| Cause shown | What to do |
|---|---|
| “There is no longer enough free space on this computer…” | Free up disk space, then click Back up now |
| “Your projects exceed the 8 GiB limit of an archive.” | Slim down the largest projects (generated files, unneeded media), then click Back up now |
| “The last automatic archive could not be created.” | Click Back up now. The app also retries on its own every hour |
The warning disappears as soon as an archive succeeds.
Limits
Section titled “Limits”- A version restore covers the code and the configuration, that is, what the online backup contains. It does not restore your images, sounds or 3D models. These files are not versioned: they live on your disk. For them, use a local archive. See also Where your project lives.
- It does not touch your game already published on Roblox. To put the restored state back online, you must republish. See Publish your game and track your versions.
- The panel does not go back beyond the last fifty versions. As saving is automatic and frequent, this covers a few hours of active work, not weeks.
- During a release’s maintenance mode, version restore is paused. The action is hidden and the message shown is: “Version restore is paused during maintenance mode — finish the fix first, then restore from here.”
Frequently asked questions
Section titled “Frequently asked questions”Do I lose the versions made after the one I restore? No. They stay in the history, and you can move forward again by restoring them in turn.
What do my teammates see when I restore? The restored version is sent to them immediately and becomes the team’s version. Files they have added since then are not deleted.
How many versions are kept? The panel lists the last fifty, and you can only restore those. If the online backup becomes too heavy, the oldest versions drop off the list, never the current state. They stay recoverable for a while: see Recover a removed version.
