Split a model to animate it

VibeStarter Plus

Splitting is charged in AI credits and does not accept a personal key.

A 3D model arrives as one single block: nothing moves independently. Splitting separates it into parts, so that it enters Roblox as a Model made of several MeshParts. Each part can then be animated, colored, or hidden separately: the lid of a chest, the turret of a vehicle, the blade of an axe.

Splitting produces a new asset. The original model stays intact in your library.

It is not in the row of buttons that appears when you hover over an asset. It is in the context menu, which opens with a right-click. A long press switches to multi-select, where this menu is no longer offered.

  1. Open the assets panel, on the My assets tab, in the 3D models category.

  2. Right-click the model, then choose Split into parts.

  3. Choose the How finely setting:

    • Simple: a few large parts, for an accessory or a weapon: handle, blade, guard;
    • Balanced: the default setting, for a character: head, torso, limbs, and accessories are split apart;
    • Detailed: many small parts, only if you need to separate small components.
  4. Check the cost shown at the bottom of the window, then click Split.

  5. Wait about two minutes. The bar shows Splitting the model… and it is normal for it to stay at 99% for up to a minute.

  6. When it finishes, the app reports the number of parts obtained and offers View.

The window tells you before it starts: the original model is kept, and the split is saved as a new asset.

Splitting is charged to your AI credits. Unlike images, 3D models, and audio, there is no personal key you can use to pay for it another way.

  • If nothing will animate the model. A static set has nothing to gain from splitting.
  • If the model is instanced many times. Each part becomes a MeshPart with its own textures, and this costs memory in Studio for every copy. The parts panel shows this itself.
  • If the model is already segmented. A model built from separate parts from the start does not need a second, paid split. Ask your agent to check before you spend anything.

Find the parts in the Parts panel, where the Spread apart button separates them visually so you can inspect them. The asset card shows a badge with the number of parts, and the Split filter, the icon shaped like scissors that appears only in the 3D models category, shows only split models.

Once the model is inserted into Studio, the parts come in loose. The app reminds you: set a PrimaryPart and weld them, or switch to Motor6D for the parts you animate, before you run the game. Otherwise the model falls apart.

  • The source file must be 150 MB or smaller. Above that, the app says the file cannot be split: either it is not a 3D model, or it exceeds the limit.
  • Splitting produces parts, not a skeleton: the joints to animate are set up afterward in Studio.
  • The Split filter exists only in the 3D models category.

Does my original model disappear? No. Splitting creates a new asset and leaves the original in place.

Can I split a model I found in the asset bank? Yes, if it appears in the 3D models category of your assets panel.

Does splitting animate the model? No. It makes animation possible. The movement is then written by an agent, in code.
